On May 18th in Santa Fe, Texas, there was another tragic event that touched the lives of many. This included not only Santa Fe, but the Country overall.  There have been 22 school shootings where someone was hurt or killed over the last five months. That averages out to more than one shooting a week. One of those 22 schools was just 2 hours away from our city, a shooting that took the innocent lives of 17 people.

In light of the recent tragedy, the CCCIA would like to take a moment to recognize a past president, current board member, and friend to many, Darryl Aubuchon, who recently became the School Resource Officer for Pine Island Elementary. Not only is Darryl a member of the law enforcement community, but he is also on campus to teach, counsel, and protect the school community. The benefits of being on campus go well beyond just violence in the school. Darryl is there to build relationships with the students while serving as a resource to all at the school to help alleviate problems in the future. Perhaps by providing roll models like Darryl, and establishing strong relationships and communication with our community and police early in the lives of our children, we can help stop this cycle of violence.

Last week Darryl was recognized at Pine Island Elementary during National Police Week for his continued dedication, compassion and unwavering support for our entire community.  We here at the CCCIA wanted to say THANK YOU Darryl for all that you do to keep our children safe, and our community vigilant. Cape Coral is blessed to have you as a representative of Cape Coral – and our own piece of Paradise.
